Worth the Drive: Two "Bay Sunrise" cocktails at Up the Creek Raw Bar in Apalachicola
Welcome to our spring 2022 travel blog. We haven't been camping since October, so we're very excited about getting back on the road. As you can see from the maps below we will be revisiting some of our favorite spots, but also exploring some new ones too. Based on lots of feedback, I'm returning to my old post format where the text and the photos are from the same day.

Day 3

 Happy Patriots Day

Leaving Massena at 5:47 AM, we headed for Nazareth, PA, where we had a reservation for a 1 pm tour of the Martin Guitar factory.

Our first 60 miles parallleled the St. Lawrence Seaway where we were treated to a closeup view of a huge tanker heading for the Great Lakes.

We arrived in Nazareth at 12:30, leaving us with just enough time to have some peanut butter sandwiches before our tour.  The factory was fascinating, and as an owner of 4 different Martins I really enjoyed seeing close up each of the 140 steps that are included in this guitar building process.  Martin employs 500 people, who produce about 120 guitars per day, although each guitar takes 90 days to make.

Martin made electric guitars in 1967, but they weren't well received and were quickly discontinued.

Leaving Martin we continued our journey south to Gettysburg we arrived at 6 pm,  just in time for dinner at Food 101.  We have dined their many times and their food never disappoints.

Baked Shrimp Pappardelle:  artichoke, spring onion, lemon, caper, edamame, cilantro, fontina, cream.

8-oz Angus short rib/beef brisket blend, smoked cheddar, caramelized onion, roasted garlic aioli, applewood smoked bacon, brioche roll.

After dinner we drove to our campsite at the Pine Grove Furnace State Park which is located at the mid point on the Appalachian Trail.  The temps had dropped to the low 30’s at this point and the ground was covered in snow, but having checked the weather report for the past two weeks we were not surprised.  Our sleeping bags are very warm!

  1. I, myself, formerly owned a Gibson Dreadnought that I could never play worth a damn. But...I have a friend in Bellingham, WA whose ex-husband sells Gibson much of the wood comprising the guitar bodies. As such, some celebrity accrues to me therein. Those of us enjoying your adventures from our couches salute you.
